In Hong Kong, it's very common for families to have live-in domestic helpers. Due to the high cost of living, most helpers don't just work for their employers. They live with them too.
Over time, these helpers become part of everyday family life. They witness the joys, struggles, and intimate moments of Hong Kong households. Often, they come to know the family better than some family members do themselves.
But what about the helpers' own families? Their homes back in their home countries? Their personal thoughts, dreams, and sacrifices? How many Hong Kong people truly stop to think about these things, or make the effort to understand?
Co-directed with director Yip Man Hay, this 15-episode series on ViuTV follows several Hong Kong employers as they travel to the homelands of their domestic helpers. Together, they journey to discover the real stories, families, and lives behind the women who have shared their homes for years, turning the most familiar strangers into people we finally truly see.
